The insulation is immediately below the waterproofing layer. The object being to design out the possibility of warm moisture laden air coming into contact with a cold surface and condensing. No ventilation is required for these types. Due to the insulation being over the top of the roof the timber structure beneath is warm which is why the term warm roof is formed.

Warm roofs offer a superior thermal performance and therefore come with a higher cost. The vapour control layer is above the decking but below the insulation. Warm roofs have an insulation layer above the roof deck. A warm flat roof is formed by placing a layer of insulation over the top of the roof structure.

The insulation is tapered to provide a fall to the roof to enable water to run to the water outlets. This keeps the structural decking usually constructed from timber steel or concrete at the same temperature levels as the internal temperature of the building. This enables the temperature of the structure and the deck to be kept close to the temperature of the inside of the building hence warm. In warm roof construction the thermal insulation layer is installed above the structural deck.

Warm roof construction requires that the entire roof construction is encapsulated within the insulation envelope of the building to be kept warm. The great thing about a warm roof is that if your existing roof surface is in good condition you don t need to do much to it. Installing a warm roof can be extremely straight forward and simple to do. This usually keeps the deck warm.
