A warm flat roof is formed by placing a layer of insulation over the top of the roof structure. In a warm roof construction the principal insulation layer is placed above the structural decking resulting in the structural deck and support structure being at a temperature similar to that of the building interior. The great thing about a warm roof is that if your existing roof surface is in good condition you don t need to do much to it. This usually keeps the deck warm.

Due to the insulation being over the top of the roof the timber structure beneath is warm which is why the term warm roof is formed. The vapour control layer is above the decking but below the insulation. The insulation is immediately below the waterproofing layer. A warm roof construction allows heat to be conserved within a property without the need for a ventilation system.

There are however some technical challenges to consider when installing and fixing a warm roof. With a warm roof the insulation is installed on top of the existing surface rather than in between the rafters.
