The sandwich warm deck roof is the most common type of flat roof. The insulation is placed below the waterproof covering and is either mechanically fixed or bitumen bonded on to the top of the deck. The major difference between the warm flat roof and the cold flat roof has to do with the air flow between the roofing timbers known as joists that help to hold up the roof.

Cold roofs and warm roofs. As opposed to old built up felt roofing with joins new single ply waterproof membranes are now most commonly used. In a warm roof construction the principal thermal insulation layer is located above the structural decking resulting in the structural deck and support structure being at a temperature close to that of the interior of the building. It is the most acceptable type of construction for domestic possessions and belongings as it avoids the need for aeration of the roof construction.

The insulation can be adhered mechanically fixed or loose laid. Warm flat roof fully packed with insulation to prevent any condensation build up where insulation above the roof void allows the air underneath to stay warm avoiding condensation but also allows for an air flow should one be deemed to be required through the joists. There are two types of flat roof. This usually keeps the deck warm.

The vapour control layer is above the decking but below the insulation. In the warm flat roof construction there is insulation packed into every possible space where air can flow. This is where the roof insulation sits directly on top of the timber structure thus keeping it warm and then the roofing membrane is laid over the insulation a cold roof places the insulation between the rafters underneath the ply roof covering. The insulation is immediately below the waterproofing layer.
